I realized that we scientists tend to look for the 'right way' to do things.We are used to chasing after formulas and theories that describe the behaviorof the universe, and this expectation that there is a 'right answer' tends topermeate much of what we do. But the world outside the controlledenvironment of the science lab doesn't work that way. It occurred to me thatthe colleagues of mine who were most successful approached their work as if itwere a game, with rules that need to be followed but with no clear 'right way'to do things. They took risks, made decisions quickly, and didn't overthinkthings - fundamentally different from what the early-career scientists I'dworked with so often seemed to do.

After earning his Masters of Education from James Madison University, Eric entered the teaching profession as a science and math teacher. In 2001, he became an assistant principal at Prospect Heights Middle School in Orange County and then at Sutherland Middle School in Albemarle County. In 2004, Eric was appointed principal of Walton Middle School. In 2007, Eric was appointed principal of Buford Middle School where he served in that capacity for 11 years. During his tenure at Buford, Eric has played an instrumental role in the creation and implementation of the Buford Lab School for Advanced Manufacturing, including major renovations of the science labs, curriculum, and the inclusion of an Engineering courses for middle school students. He partnered with community representatives to create a schoolyard garden at Buford, which serves as a model for gardens throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. During his tenure at Buford, he implemented an athletic program, which now includes 11 sports. Eric enjoys working with people, especially middle school students.

But thanks to recent scientific developments in areas such as biotechnology, information technology and nanotechnology, humanity may be on the cusp of an enhancement revolution. In the next two or three decades, people may have the option to change themselves and their children in ways that, up to now, have existed largely in the minds of science fiction writers and creators of comic book superheroes.

This enhancement revolution, if and when it comes, may well be prompted by ongoing efforts to aid people with disabilities and heal the sick. Indeed, science is already making rapid progress in new restorative and therapeutic technologies that could, in theory, have implications for human enhancement.

The science that underpins transhumanist hopes is impressive, but there is no guarantee that researchers will create the means to make super-smart or super-strong people. Questions remain about the feasibility of radically changing human physiology, in part because scientists do not yet completely understand our bodies and minds. For instance, researchers still do not fully comprehend how people age or fully understand the source of human consciousness.

In the United States we have the greatest sport specific scientific base in the world. Our biomechanical, physiological and psychological labs have the best scientists and technology. Yet, so many coaches of all disciplines fail to truly understand the science behind their sport. Endurance, speed, flexibility, strength and coordination are the components of every sport. When to apply concepts such as overload, recovery, and periodization must be designed and applied before we are ready to motivate the athlete to perform. The coach must constantly study the research material, subscribe to technical publications and listen to the scientists. This will help much more than copying what they do at the school down the road.

Coaches should read the science of their sport, and they should also read about the lives of successful coaches outside of their sport or discipline. The principle for success, professionalism, and preparation is best learned while not cluttered around training. It is about dealing with people as much as dealing with the sport. 041b061a72
