The tropics are warm all year, averaging 25 to 28 degrees Celsius (77 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit). This is because the tropics get more exposure to the sun. Because of all that sun, the tropics don't experience the kind of seasons the rest of Earth does. The tropical seasons are broken up into just two: the wet season and the dry season.
The Snows of KilimanjaroElevation can affect the climate of a tropical region. Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, with an elevation of 5,895 meters (19,340 feet), is a tropical mountain cold enough to support glaciers.
Gordon's angle of approach to our coastline put much of the area in a favorable location for heavy rainfall. Highest rainfall amounts occurred over northwest Florida coastline, well to the east of where Gordon made landfall. Rainbands persisted across Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties in Florida and Baldwin and Clarke Counties in Alabama well after Gordon made landfall. The image below from the NWS Weather Prediction Center shows the preliminary rainfall and track of Tropical Storm Gordon (downgraded to a tropical depression when the image was posted online). The image clearly shows the bulk of the rain fell to the east of the track of Gordon with an axis of high storm total rainfall stretching across our area.
Strong winds along the coast led to some damage to homes, mainly in the form of roof and siding damage, in the Dauphin Island and Ft Morgan areas. A steeple was blown off a church in Orange Beach, AL. One fatality was reported when a tree fell onto a mobile home in Escambia County, FL. The wind also resulted in pockets of downed trees along the coast. Further inland, the combination of tropical storm force wind gusts and saturated soil resulted in several trees falling across Greene and George Counties in southeast Mississippi. Further east, numerous trees fell in the Jackson and Thomasville communities in Clarke County, AL.
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) include several parasitic viral, bacterial, fungal, and non-communicable diseases that cause substantial illness for more than one billion people globally. Affecting the populations already experiencing health and economic disparities, NTDs impair physical and cognitive development, contribute to mother and child illness and death, make it difficult to farm or earn a living, and limit productivity in the workplace.
The Fundamentals course presents an overview of ecological and social foundations for planning effective conservation and restoration projects. Participants learn about: (a) relationships between people and natural resources in the tropics, (b) ecological processes that affect tropical landscape management, (c) disciplinary approaches to tropical land management and (d) planning sustainable and resilient interventions.
The optional Field course immerses participants in a tropical forest landscape for one week with multiple and oftentimes competing land use practices. The course challenges participants to think critically about what it takes to turn a project plan into action. Participants: (a) visit conservation and restoration projects, (b) meet people who are making a difference in the field, (c) practice skills and (d) enhance their teamwork abilities.
